What are the special characteristics of a magnet system?

Important characteristics of magnet systems

Principle

Magnet systems consist of one or several magnets mounted on a steel plate. In small magnet systems, a single multipolar magnet is installed, and four to twelve magnets in larger magnet systems. On the steel plate, the magnets are arranged with alternating poles. Thanks to this design, the adhesive forces of the magnets are bundled on one side of the system. This positively affects the overall adhesive force, which increases as a result.

In our online shop, you will find magnet systems in different designs and with various accessories.

Displacement force

Our magnet systems have a white or black rubber coating made of TPE synthetics (thermoplastic elastomers). This rubber coating increases the displacement force. With the displacement force, the load force acts parallel to the contact surface. This is particularly important when you want to attach items to a wall in combination with hooks, handles or eyelets. Therefore, when purchasing magnet systems, check whether the indicated displacement force is suitable for the intended use.
The displacement force is also called shear force or load capacity in shear direction. You can find more information on the shear force on our FAQ page about adhesive force vs displacement force.

Adhesive force

With magnet systems, the full adhesive force is achieved when the ferromagnetic counterpart is smooth, of sufficient thickness and makes direct and full flush contact. Due to their design, magnet systems already start to lose part of their adhesive force at a small distance from the ferromagnetic surface.

Outdoor use

Rubberised magnet systems are generally better suited for outdoor applications than standard pot magnets. However, you can only use magnet systems outdoors to a limited extent:
  • Sun exposure: Avoid direct sunlight over an extended period. UV radiation causes the rubber to become brittle. In addition, the white rubber coating will turn yellowish over time.

  • Corrosion on the magnet: Though the rubber coating protects the neodymium magnets from splashes and moisture, it does not seal the magnets hermetically and they can rust if water penetrates the rubber coating. Due to the rust, the neodymium magnet will lose its strength after a while.

  • Rust on the accessories: If used outdoors for a long time, rust can form on the screw socket, the internal thread or the threaded stud. The accessories, such as hooks or eyelets, are not made of stainless steel and can quickly develop a rust film.

For more information, please visit our FAQ page about outdoor use.
We recommend you only use magnet systems outdoors for a short time and remove and wipe them dry after use. Our super magnet box is perfect for storage.

Accessories for magnet systems

Another advantage of magnet systems: versatile accessories can be switched out depending on the application. Choose the best accessories for your project from plastic handles, screw hooks and threaded eyebolts, screw-on metal discs, self-adhesive metal discs and nuts and bolts.

Differences between magnets systems and pot magnets

Structure

Magnet systems consist of one or more small neodymium disc magnets, mounted on a steel plate with alternating poles. This increases the adhesive force. Pot magnets, on the other hand, are individual neodymium magnets embedded in a steel pot. Here, the steel pot increases the adhesive force of the magnet. You can find additional information on the characteristics of pot magnets on our FAQ page about pot magnet features.
A special feature of magnet systems: compared to pot magnets, they are flatter and can be used more discreetly.

Rubber coating

The rubber coating not only increases the load capacity in shear direction (see above) but also protects delicate surfaces from scratches. Thanks to the white or black colouring, the rubberised magnet systems can be used very discreetly.
For pot magnets, we offer rubber caps that you can put over the contact surface. These also protect delicate surfaces and increase the load capacity of the magnet in the shear direction. However, the load capacity in the direction of the tensile force will decrease slightly.

Can two identical magnet system be combined?

Most magnet systems can be combined. For details, please refer to the description of the respective product. Due to the alternating pole arrangement of the disc magnets on the steel plate, magnet systems can be paired with one another as desired.
Please note: Depending on the adhesive force, magnet systems can be difficult to separate once they are combined. To find out how to separate strong magnets more easily, take a look at our FAQ page on separating/combining.
In contrast, all of our pot magnets have the same pole on the contact surface. This is why pot magnets can not be placed flush on top of one another because they repel each other.

Application areas for magnet systems

Magnet systems are especially well suited for use in the following sectors:
  • Shopfitting
  • Exhibition booth construction
  • Bathroom and kitchen installation
  • Lighting engineering and technology
